Panasonic to retreat from consumer smartphones - president

"TOKYO (Reuters) - Panasonic Corp will pull out of the smartphone market in Japan and pare its smartphone operations to outsourced production in emerging markets like India, the company's president said on Wednesday.

The Japanese electronics company, which has suffered $15 billion (9 billion pounds) in losses over its latest two financial years, is staking its turnaround on a transformation from a consumer gadget maker to a supplier for other businesses.

The architect of this turnaround plan, Panasonic President Kazuhiro Tsuga, has warned he would weed out any division that fails to meet a 5 percent operating margin goal within three years.

Tsuga told Reuters in an interview that the company's mobile division was likely to lose more than the 1.1 billion yen ($11.02 million) targeted loss for the financial year ending next March. Panasonic's mobile division posted an 8.1 billion yen loss last year.

"It's not acceptable for the company to be bleeding red ink like this, so we have to think about ways to develop assets that we do have in a more effective direction," Tsuga said.

While the company is stepping back from the consumer smartphone market, it has said it is developing smartphones for business use that would be similar to its popular "Toughbook" notebook PC series.

Panasonic is one of several handset makers caught out by the meteoric rise of the two dominant smartphone makers - Apple Inc and Samsung Electronic Co Ltd - which have upended the traditional hierarchy of mobile players.

Microsoft Corp this week agreed to buy Nokia's phone business, which once dominated the global market but has slipped drastically in recent years.

Japanese consumers, once partial to highly customised feature phones made by Panasonic, NEC Corp and Fujitsu Ltd, have since moved in large numbers to Apple's popular iPhones and Samsung's Galaxy series.

In 2001, Panasonic was the second-largest handset maker in Japan, after NEC, with more than 19 percent of the market. Last year, it barely had a 7 percent share, far behind Apple's 25 percent lead.

Tsuga said Panasonic did not need to manufacture and sell its own smartphones under a vertically integrated business model, but will instead use the company's brand to sell phones made by other manufacturers as it does already in India.

The knockout blow to its business came when NTT DoCoMo Inc, Japan's biggest mobile carrier and a loyal distributor for Japanese-made handsets, announced it would promote only Sony Corp's flagship Xperia smartphone and the Samsung Galaxy during its summer campaign.

NEC announced in July that it would pull out of smartphones after discussions to sell its handset business to Lenovo Group Ltd fell through, sources familiar with the matter said.

New poll shows clear leader in NYC Democratic mayoral primary

"NEW YORK — Just one week before the Sept. 10 primary, a new poll suggests Bill de Blasio could possibly avoid a runoff in the Democratic race for mayor.

A Quinnipiac University survey released Tuesday found that 43 percent of likely Democratic voters are backing de Blasio's bid to replace outgoing Mayor Michael Bloomberg — just past the 40 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff election.

De Blasio, who is the city's public advocate, has a 23-point lead over his closest contender, former Comptroller Bill Thompson, who is in second place at 20 percent. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, once the front-runner in the race, has slipped to 18 percent support.

The other contenders in the race are in single digits, including former Rep. Anthony Weiner, at 7 percent, Comptroller John Liu at 4 percent and former City Council member Sal Albanese at 1 percent. Eight percent of voters remain undecided, according to the poll, which reported a plus or minus 3.6 percentage point margin of error.

But it's unclear if de Blasio really has cleared the 40 percent threshold needed. Quinnipiac's likely vote tally also included people who said they are undecided but are leaning toward a candidate — a caveat that could have a significant impact on where the mayoral hopefuls actually stand.

A New York Times/Siena College poll released last Friday — which did not include "leaners" — found de Blasio with 32 percent support among likely Democratic voters, trailed by Thompson (18 percent) and Quinn (17 percent).

The Quinnipiac poll continues to mark a dramatic turnaround in fortunes for de Blasio, who had been trailing in fourth place just six weeks ago. His surge appears to be linked to his heavy campaigning on issues including his stance against the city's controversial stop-and-frisk measure, which allowed police officers to randomly search people, and income inequality in New York. Both issues have helped him win strong support among the city's black voters, who make up about 30 percent of the electorate.

According to Quinnipiac, 47 percent of black voters are backing de Blasio, compared with 25 percent for Thompson, the race's only black candidate.

De Blasio has also won over women — a crucial voting bloc that had been expected to back Quinn, who is vying to be the city's first female mayor. The poll finds that 44 percent of female voters are backing de Blasio, compared with 19 percent for Thompson and 18 percent for Quinn."

Seth Meyers Gets Hitched, Has Star-Studded Wedding

"Here's a weekend update for you: Seth Meyers is married!

The "Saturday Night Live" funnyman and future host of "Late Night," 39, said "I do" to human rights lawyer Alexi Ashe on on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.

Us Weekly reports the bride wore a cap sleeve lace dress while Meyers opted for a dark colored suit.

There were plenty of famous guests in attendance...

Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis, Allison Williams, Rose Byrne, Jimmy Fallon, Jack McBrayer, Bobby Cannavale, Jake Gyllenhaal and his Sports Illustrated model girlfriend Alyssa Miller, Kristen Wiig, Will Forte, and Kenan Thompson all reportedly watched Seth tie the knot!

The small island, where President Obama and the first family vacationed earlier this month, was buzzing leading up to the holiday weekend wedding, which took place at September 1. That's because guests including Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were spotted, and word spread quickly with locals and vacationers about a "'Saturday Night Live' wedding.

Ashe's parents own a home on the island and she and Meyers, who met at a wedding and dated for several years before confirming their engagement in July, have visited many times together this summer and in years past.

There is no doubt that tears were shed at the ceremony, including by the groom himself.

"I'm a crier," he told Elle in 2012. "When my girlfriend and I talk about being happy, I'll get choked up, which I think is the greatest gift you can give a girlfriend."

And earlier this month Meyers talked to Jimmy Fallon about wedding planning, which was in full swing, hinting a beach wedding was in the works.

"Every now and again, she'll throw me a courtesy question," he said. "Do you think the invitations should have seashells or lighthouses? I'll be like, 'Seashells?' And she'll be like '... Not lighthouses?'"

None of those small details matter anymore ... just the happily ever after part."
